John Randall on the most versatile horses to have won at the Cheltenham Festival
1 Milton became the first horse to win at both Royal Ascot and the Cheltenham Festival by taking the Ribblesdale Stakes in 1919 –before the race was confined to fillies – and the Gloucestershire (now Supreme Novices') Hurdle in 1921. He had beaten Buchan in the Criterion Stakes at Newmarket and come eighth in the Derby. He went on to sire Poet Prince, the 1941 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner.
2 Brown Jack is still revered for his seven victories at Royal Ascot, comprising one in the Ascot Stakes (1928) and six in the Queen Alexandra Stakes (1929-34), which he monopolised because, as a gelding, he was ineligible for the Ascot Gold Cup. Before that, as a four-year-old in 1928, he had won the second running of the Champion Hurdle – before it became a championship race.
3 Vulgan had just been imported from France when winning a division of the Gloucestershire Hurdle in 1948. That was his only race over jumps in Britain, and three months later he landed the Queen Alexandra Stakes. He became champion sire of jumpers ten times and emulated Milton by siring a Gold Cup winner (The Dikler). His other sons included Salmon Spray (Champion Hurdle) and Grand National winners Team Spirit, Foinavon and Gay Trip.
