Andrew Lynch on his favourite winners of the Lexus Chase
Lexus has ended its sponsorship of the Grade 1 chase over 3m at Leopardstown's Christmas festival and leading Irish jockey Andrew Lynch picks out his five favourite races during that 13-year term
Tidal Bay (2012)
It was utterly frustrating from my point of view as I was convinced Flemenstar was going to win the whole way but he just didn't get home. He had jumped brilliantly and travelled so sweetly in my hands the whole way but he began to tire on the run-in and we were mobbed by Tidal Bay close home. There were almost four of us in a line with First Lieutenant (second) and Sir Des Champs (fourth) and I'm sure the neutrals will say it was one of the most exciting races to ever grace Leopardstown. I didn't win it but it was some race to be involved in.
Denman (2007)
The Tank was terrific around Leopardstown. It was his Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning season and he had won the Hennessy by 11 lengths at Newbury off a mark of 161 earlier in the month. He arrived at Leopardstown with a tall reputation and he didn't disappoint. He made most and galloped his five rivals into submission under Ruby Walsh. It was the performance of a top staying chaser at the peak of his powers.
