Rodney Masters, the Racing Post’s now retired Lambourn correspondent, recently texted me. His message read: “I’ve just had my hair cut by a chatty girl named Clara. She said, ‘I know he has been dead a long time now but I often cut David Ashforth’s hair’.”

I hope Clara’s wrong but, dead or alive, on Monday I’m off to Wolverhampton for a revival of Grab A Grand, trying to win £1,000 for charity, this time for Racing to School and Tenovus (a wonderful charity that tackles cancer by singing at it). I hope the week ends with a plus sign, so they don’t have to pay me.

After Wolverhampton, it’ll be Brighton, Worcester (River Severn permitting), Haydock and Doncaster, possibly stopping off at the Samaritans on the way.
