Walter Swinburn and Garrett Gomez, two great jockeys found dead within two days of each other last month, were two enormous losses to the racing world in 2016.

Naturally gifted and perhaps the best big-race jockey of his time, Swinburn was only 55 but had been suffering from epilepsy.

He won eight British Classics, including two more Derbys on Shahrastani and Lammtarra, plus the Arc on All Along (he was the seventh-choice jockey) and the Breeders' Cup Turf on Pilsudski.
