Golden opportunities: Bro Park the beginning of a new phase for Swedish racing
Kitty Trice travels to Europe's newest racecourse
England may have failed to progress to the final of the Women's World Cup in France but they are still strongly represented in Sweden. Swap football boots for racehorses and you end up with the Women Jockeys' World Cup at Bro Park.
The Women Jockeys' World Cup, known formerly as the Lady Jockeys' Thoroughbred World Championships, was created to give international opportunities for female riders and to provide a platform for aspiring young stars. It also highlights the ambitious nature of Bro Park itself.
Among the jockeys on show is Sophie Ralston, now riding for Group 1-winning trainer Dean Ivory following her public plea for more support in a letter to the Racing Post and happily on track for her best-ever season. Talented apprentice Jane Elliott, a late replacement for Hayley Turner, is also here as both bid to dethrone reigning champion, Josefin Landgren. Further familiarity to the travelling Brit is provided by Derek Thompson, clocking up another gig as racecourse commentator and here with all his celebrated repartee intact.
