A majority of operators are set to have the fees they pay to the Gambling Commission reduced from April under proposals outlined in a new consultation, although one major operator warned the balance may have tipped too far.

The joint consultation between the commission and Department for Culture, Media and Sport proposes changes that would reduce the overall fee burden across the industry by an estimated 10 ten per cent and benefit smaller operators, while also removing potential barriers to entering the gambling market.

Fees based on the number of premises would be replaced by fee categories based on gross gambling yield, with those categories being sub divided to ensure the commission's costs are recovered on a fairer basis
