Frankie Dettori has had a good year; a very good year. Simultaneously stating the obvious and an understatement that may be, but when talking about the face of the sport we need that face to be sporting its trademark smile that is recognised around the world. And there has been plenty to smile about in 2018.

A second Arc on Enable; the £1 million stayers' bonus courtesy of Stradivarius; another Champion Stakes with Cracksman; one for next year in Too Darn Hot. The list goes on – yet swap Enable for Ouija Board, Stradivarius for Sixties Icon, Too Darn Hot for Authorized and we could still be talking about the same jockey, different year. Last season may have been the kind many can only dream of, but for Dettori it was very much a case of business as usual – with some extra highlights thrown in.

The Italian, who moved to Newmarket aged just 14, has been one of the most successful and consistent riders in the sport since becoming the first teenager since Lester Piggott to ride a century in 1990. Yet in his early years he didn't always see himself getting to where he is today.
