Expect the unexpected in a thrilling sport that will capture your heart
Lucas Coppin, 17, tells us why he loves the sport
My earliest racing memory was selecting Ballabriggs in the 2011 Grand National, which, as we all know, he went on to win. After several meetings, from Taunton and Chepstow, to Bath and Stratford, I was starting to really get into the sport.
Thanks to my uncle, Michael Harris, I started to capture the sport through photography. Running around the racetrack, darting through crowds of people and stepping in puddles to get the perfect shot of AP McCoy returning on a winner – it was very good fun. It wasn’t until Champions Day 2012, however, that I got truly hooked on the sport. Capturing the greatest horse of all time, Frankel, as he stormed away from the Champion Stakes field accompanied by the deafening noise from the crowd, was like nothing I had experienced before.
Two years after that, many open days and a few thousand photos later, I returned to Ascot to watch Noble Mission emulate his brother. It was like going back in time and something I will never forget. Watching one of Lizzie Kelly’s first winners, in the pouring rain at Cheltenham, was another moment to savour.
