An annual rite will be enacted on Wednesday, which marks the official commencement of the covering season. Established stallions will slip back into action without turning a hair, but for the new boys February 15 is a seminal date in their young lives.

It's exciting for any stud to have a new recruit. Hope springs eternal within the breeding community as successful stallions can emerge from the most unlikely source. Witness Kodiac, who never won outside handicap company but will reconvene in Ireland this week at a covering fee of €50,000. When he debuted in the covering shed ten years ago he commanded just €5,000 per mare.
