When Red Rum won his third Grand National in 1977 there were many commentators happy to trot out the line that the great horse's feats were of such magnitude they would never be equalled.

As the decades passed and successive National heroes failed even to back up a lone win in the Aintree showpiece, the myth gained traction – if not carved in stone, then at least inked into racing folklore.

Last Saturday, while Tiger Roll wasn't quite registering his third success in the world's favourite steeplechase, he at least proved winning a second was no longer an impossibility.
