The Gambling Commission has given only a qualified welcome to a new code of conduct for online game design published by industry standards body the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) last week.

The BGC said the new code had been created in a bid to improve player safety and tackle problem gambling, with measures including the slowing down of spin speeds, banning a number of gaming features which have caused concern and improved access to safer gambling information.

Among the commitments included in the code are minimum game cycle speeds of 2.5 seconds, the ending of turbo play, which allows players to speed up games, and the scrapping of multi-slot play, which allows a player to place multiple stakes on different games at the same time.
