After Manchester City completed the signing of Monaco full-back Benjamin Mendy last month, it was claimed that the Citizens' defence spending in 2017 had exceeded that of 47 nation states.

It's a wonderful, if slightly terrifying, statistic and as Pep Guardiola's side started the season with a clean sheet at Brighton it's clearly a couple of hundred million pounds well spent.

Several of City's Premier League rivals, however, are looking about as defensively secure as Guam.
