Speak to enough trainers for long enough and you'll realise many of them consider it a virtue to be in two minds until they absolutely have to make a decision, but this week will take even the greatest prevaricators among them to a new level of uncertainty.

With Pattern races and heritage handicaps coming out of their ears, the weather threatening all manner of options and the busiest day of the year charging over the hill at them, they'll be busily formulating Plans A through Z and then looking for a couple more besides, none more so than William Haggas.

The master of Somerville Lodge has several scenarios in his mind, the best of which involves watching the rain out of his kitchen window and bagging a couple of Group 1s at his local track, but there are other, less acceptable, possibilities.
