Brilliant Bergo took me around the world and always tried his heart out
At The Races presenter Hayley Moore on her favourite horses
Bergo
He was such a versatile horse – he won on the Flat, over hurdles and over fences – and he always ran his heart out, he tried so hard. He had a few niggles, physically he wasn't the most straightforward, but he was an absolute gentleman to deal with. I travelled him to Dubai when he ran in the Gold Cup at Meydan – he was runner-up — and I just love the fact that he could finish fourth in a Grade 1 chase at Aintree and win the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot in the space of two months.
Mourilyan
A gorgeous horse, I rode him at home when he was with Dad and I adored him. He was such a good stayer and he was the horse who first took me to Australia when he finished third in the Melbourne Cup, staying on best of all and trying his heart out as ever. Through that trip – through him, really – I made lots of contacts and a few years later I was invited back to work in Australia. He opened doors for me and I'll never forget him.
Sire De Grugy
Do I need to explain why he's on the list? He gave my brother Jamie his first Cheltenham Festival winner, gave Dad his second festival win, and the Champion Chase has always been my favourite race because there's something wonderful about a really good two-mile chaser. He's still at the yard and I ride him now and again – he really is the horse of a lifetime for all of us.
