Bounce-back for Ballydoyle as yard lands top prizes at Sandown and Saint-Cloud

It's a rollercoaster, this game, and in a way it's reassuring that even Aidan O'Brien must experience it that way. The master of Ballydoyle had a tough time on home turf just a week ago, when High Definition flopped, Santa Barbara was beaten again and he managed just a single winner during the Saturday and Sunday of the Irish Derby meeting, but the following weekend surely made up for it.
O'Brien achieved an international Group 1 double. St Mark's Basilica staked his claim to being the best of his generation in the Coral-Eclipse on Saturday and then the five-year-old Broome finally broke his duck at the highest level in Sunday's Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.
As he basked in the glow of their twin triumphs – does Aidan bask? Probably not, in fairness – the trainer may have wished he had also aimed a runner at the German Derby to really top things off.
