Bet365 have made their first major play into the burgeoning US sports betting market after signing a $50 million "strategic alliance" with casino company Empire Resorts.

The bookmakers have entered into a 20-year agreement with Empire to offer retail sports betting, an online sportsbook and online gaming at Resorts World Catskills in New York state, if and when sports betting is permitted there.

The state is expected to be the most lucrative in the US outside California following the Supreme Court's decision to repeal the ban on sports betting this year. However, while Resorts World Catskills is one of only four commercial casinos in the state currently authorised to offer retail sports betting, the legislation which would allow it to launch is not yet in place.
