Albany aces look underrated in the 1,000 Guineas betting
James Pyman analyses the juvenile form with a mind to next year's Classics
We have entered the period of the season when the two-year-old form is settling down. It is becoming increasingly clear which juveniles will be pushing for the top positions in the end-of-season classifications and will be strong contenders for next year’s Classics, and Glorious Goodwood last week has allowed us to join up some more of the dots with regard to the pecking order in the two-year-old colts division.
Expert Eye was so impressive in winning the Group 2 7f Vintage Stakes by four and a half lengths on just his second start that he has replaced Aidan O’Brien’s Gustav Klimt at the top of the betting for the Qipco 2,000 Guineas, while the Group 2 6f Richmond Stakes was won by Barraquero, who on his debut was beaten three and three-quarter lengths by Expert Eye in a 6½f novice stakes at Newbury.
It's a reminder that sometimes high-class two-year-olds are often introduced in the same race – Frankel on his debut beat Nathaniel, also running for the first time, in a Newmarket maiden which proved to be one of the most informative two-year-old races of the 2010 season – and the Newbury novice stakes run on June 15 won by Expert Eye allows us to compare the Guineas favourite to many of this season’s other top two-year-old performers.
