1 The parade ring, public saddling, numbers on racecards, different priced enclosures and the starting flag were all first seen at Goodwood, innovations of owner and MP Lord George Bentinck in the early 1800s.

2 Presenter Clare Balding won the Royal Sussex Regiment Amateur Riders' Handicap two years running on Waterlow Park, but Goodwood is also the only place she was ever booed by a racegoer, after a ride on beaten favourite Mailman in 1988. She recalled: "One of the racegoers shouted: 'You ought to get going a bit earlier, darling'."

3 The first public commentary at a racecourse in Britain was made at Goodwood in 1952 by Bob Haynes.
