Julian Muscat relives Equinoctial's historic win with the horse's connections
History is an infrequent visitor to Kelso racecourse. It's a place renowned for its conviviality, where locals meet to chew the cud in the picturesque setting of the Duke of Roxburghe's estate in the Scottish Borders.
Thirty years on, however, events on the afternoon of November 21, 1990, still convey a unique resonance. In the fifth of seven races a young conditional turned for home in third place before galvanising his mount to overhaul the leader up Kelso's arduous run-in.
It was the most improbable of victories. The grandstand was stunned into silence as Andy Heywood rode into the winner's enclosure, grinning from ear to ear. The only others to share his glee were the bookmakers: Heywood had just prevailed aboard Equinoctial at mind-blowing odds of 250-1.
