Kieren Fallon has been admitted to hospital for treatment for the severe depression which prompted him to announce his retirement from the saddle last week.

Dr Adrian McGoldrick, chief medical officer of the Turf Club, said yesterday: "Kieren was admitted to a hospital in Dublin on Sunday and will be receiving treatment for his depression."

The six-time British champion jockey, who won 16 Classics in Britain and rode for Sir Henry Cecil, Sir Michael Stoute and Aidan O’Brien in a stellar career, announced through McGoldrick eight days ago that he was retiring aged 51, having battled with depression and profound fatigue for a few years.
