'She has huge potential' - exciting Laurel supplemented for Sun Chariot bid

Juddmonte's exciting Laurel has been supplemented for Saturday's Sun Chariot Stakes (2.42) at Newmarket and their racing manager Barry Mahon is hoping to take advantage of a "long season" for her rivals.

The three-year-old was an impressive debut winner at Newmarket in July and followed up on that promise with a resounding success at Kempton this month.

She will enter Saturday's Group 1 as the least experienced in the line-up, but Mahon is hoping that the freshness of their exciting John and Thady Gosden-trained filly can bring her to the fore.

Mahon said: "It's been a long season and there's some very good fillies in it, but they've probably had plenty of starts and we're a relatively fresh filly."

Mahon thinks highly of the daughter of Kingman and believes she can make a dent on her way to an exciting four-year-old campaign.

"We think she's a very good filly, it's just a case of her experience going into a contest like this" added Mahon. "It'll be tough, but we think she's a filly who will be competing in these races in the future.

"She's a big, scopey filly, and her future is ahead of her. She's only had the two starts and has come to the party very late. It's credit to John and Thady, who have done a great job with her.

"She has huge potential, but she has to go do it on the racetrack."

Mahon also gave a positive update on the Dewhurst-bound Chaldean, who was last seen winning the Group 2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster.

"He's in good form at home and Andrew Balding is very pleased with him," added Mahon. "The good thing about him is that he's not a flash horse, he just does enough and is a very relaxed horse, but he turns up in the afternoon and does it on the big day."

Connections are hoping for a big run in next Saturday's Dewhurst, which can keep them dreaming of a Guineas bid in the spring.

"The mile will bring out a little bit more improvement, Ryan [Moore] felt the mile would suit him well after the Acomb and Frankie [Dettori] said he'd sharpened up a lot after the Champange.

"If he can run a good race in the Dewhurst, he'll keep us dreaming for the winter, and we'll come away and hopefully turn up to a Guineas trial in the spring."

Defending champion Saffron Beach heads the rest of Sun Chariot contenders

Saffron Beach remains on course to defend her Sun Chariot crown but will face a renewed threat from the horses who finished behind her in the Matron.

She was an impressive three-length winner twelve months ago and has gone from strength to strength this year, winning the Duke Of Cambridge at Royal Ascot before another Group 1 success in the Prix Rothschild at Deauville.

Jane Chapple-Hyam's filly was unable to reel in an enterprisingly-ridden Pearls Galore in the Matron Stakes but will bid to cap off her season in style at a venue she adores, having posted form figures of 112201 at Newmarket.

Impressive Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Homeless Songs is set to take her chance but will need to bounce back from a below-par effort behind Saffron Beach in the Matron.

Softer ground and a muddling pace may have counted against her that day, however, and connections will be hoping a rainy forecast this week is incorrect.

Aidan O'Brien has won three renewals of the Sun Chariot and relies on last year's Cheveley Park winner Tenebrism, who was third in the Matron.

She would not be deterred by any rain, having posted form figures of 1123 on ground slower than good, including a victory on soft ground.

1,000 Guineas runner-up Prosperous Voyage was a surprise winner of the Falmouth but was unable to reproduce that level in the Prix Jacques le Marois. Ralph Beckett will hope his filly can bounce back at a venue that has consistently brought out the best in her.

There could be French representation in the form of By All Means, beaten a neck by the George Boughey-trained Oscula – who is also entered – in a Deauville Group 3 in August.

One notable omission is Prix du Moulin winner Dreamloper, who will sidestep the race in order to be kept fresh for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Keeneland in November.
