Epsom delighted as 65,000 enjoy gorgeous weather at trouble-free Derby
There was no serious trouble at Epsom during the two-day Derby meeting from an aggregate crowd of 65,000, plus tens of thousands on the Hill on Saturday, racecourse boss Phil White has reported.
Major disturbances had marred Saturday afternoon meetings in the south at Goodwood and Ascot last month, while minor incidents have been reported at Nottingham, York, Salisbury and Hexham recently, but Epsom's preventative measures appeared to work well.
White said: "It was brilliant. We had glorious weather both days after thunderstorms had changed the going in midweek to soft, and we all enjoyed a fantastic couple of days of great racing with a carnival atmosphere throughout the site.
"Numbers were really good and there was no trouble. The measures we put in place did what we hoped they would. The paid enclosures had a highly visible police and security presence, and there was no major trouble on the Hill."
He added: "We staggered the closing of the bars according to how busy they were, and so that we could manage the timing of people leaving the site. We had DJs afterwards in the Hyperion Bar by the parade ring, and that proved really popular. It's not new, but it's a nice way to finish the day.
"We introduced more water stations around the site and got really good customer feedback about it. Again, it's not new, but we expanded it with hawkers going around the site offering water, so that including the mobile ones there were 45 water stations around the site. We also offered water as people were leaving the track."
There had been hopes that Investec, sponsoring the meeting for the tenth time, might enjoy an extra-special Derby through Young Rascal, owned by co-founder Bernard Kantor. However, the colt never got into a rhythm and finished only seventh.
White said: "It would have been even better if Young Rascal had won for Bernard, but I understand he really enjoyed the occasion all the same. Investec are a great partner, and we've got them now until 2026."
