Dunlop leads the tributes to versatile Derby runner-up

John Dunlop has paid tribute to his 1991 Derby runner-up Marju, who has died in retirement aged 28.

Dunlop, who trained Marju for Hamdan Al Maktoum and won the Craven Stakes and St James’s Palace with him, said: “Marju was a charming horse, not very big but a very nice character with a very nice temperament.

“He was most remarkably versatile, because he was second to Generous in the Derby and then came back to a mile and won the St James’s Palace, which was an extraordinary performance.
