Tommy Dowling, who suffered horrific injuries which led to the insertion of two metal rods in his back after a fall at Fontwell in April, is just days away from reaching a significant milestone as he closes in on a remarkable return to race riding.

After months of rehabilitation aided by the staff and facilities at Oaksey House in Lambourn, Dowling will be back on horseback on Monday as he returns to work for boss Charlie Mann and, if all goes to plan, is eyeing a September return to the track.

“I’m riding out from Monday onwards and hoping to be back race riding in around three weeks,” said Dowling. “Everything is going according to plan at the minute and Michael Foy [orthopaedic and spinal surgeon] has passed me back but I need to see him again on September 4 and then should be okay to race ride.”
