Brian Toomey dismayed as he is refused payout over career-ending head injury

Brian Toomey has spoken of his frustration at being denied an insurance payout following the horrific fall at Perth in 2013 that in effect ended his riding career, after reaching the end of a protracted dispute process.

His miraculous but short-lived return to the saddle in 2015 has proved very expensive for Toomey, as it is now cited by Aviva as the reason it is not obliged to make a payment for a career-ending injury under the policy which the Professional Jockeys Association had with the insurance company at the time.

"I'm disappointed that I haven't been looked after," Toomey told the Racing Post this week. "As a jockey, the insurance is supposed to be there for us if something happens. Fair enough, I didn't take it at first because I got back racing but then when I reapplied for my licence and got turned down, it wasn't there for me."
