Dettori narrowly fails in bid for native Guineas success
Frankie Dettori failed by a short head in his bid to land a first victory in the local version of the 2,000 Guineas at Capannelle on Monday, his mount Patriot Hero being collared in the final stride by Anda Muchacho.
The first two, who were were unbeaten in two runs and dominated the betting in the Group 3 Premio Parioli, were ridden close to the pace set by outsider Aspettatemi.
It was Dettori who enjoyed first run when taking his mount to the front with two furlongs to run. Dario Vargiu was awake to the move but it took time to stoke Anda Muchacho into top gear.
However, he produced an impressive final-furlong run which took him to the front in the last stride, with the pair a length and a half clear of the third-placed finisher, Amore Hass.
Winning connections suggested they would scan the French programme book for a possible next target.
Dettori was also out of luck on the well-beaten Fataliste in the local 1,000 Guineas, the Premio Regina Elena, coming home 14th of the 15 runners.
The race was won by Mi Raccomando, giving trainer Stefano Botti a third successive win in the contest. Mi Raccomando beat Lady Ramon by a short neck, the pair pulling three lengths clear of Stamp Collecting, who had set the pace.
