Dermot Weld among big names to pay tribute to former jockey Gus Fahy

Dermot Weld, Ted Walsh and Tony Redmond have paid tribute to Gus Fahy, the former National Hunt rider who died aged 84 this week.

Fahy rode successfully in the 1960s before taking up a role with the Turf Club. He also had a cure for equine lymphangitis and was a great help to many trainers.

Weld said: "I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to his dear wife Audrey. I always remember Gus as being extremely helpful when he worked with the Turf Club after he retired from a successful career as a National Hunt jockey."

Redmond, a champion jump jockey in Ireland in the 60s, remembered his former weighing-room colleague: "I knew Gus over 50 years. He was a quiet but nice guy – not a barrel of laughs but very down to earth."

He added: "Before he came to the Curragh, he was with a trainer called W J Byrne in the Phoenix Park – known as the Rasher Byrne. He had a good career."

Ted Walsh, who mentioned Fahy during RTE's coverage of the Leopardstown Christmas festival, also offered his condolences and said: "I knew Gus well and he was a gentleman."

Fahy is survived by his wife Audrey, his children Lorcan, Michelle, Suzanne and their mother Anne, grandchildren, sister, daughter-in-law, nephews, brother-in-law, neighbours and his many friends. His funeral took place on Friday.
