Delight for local trainer Chris Mason as spectators return to Welsh courses

Gilt Edge followed up her Lingfield success this month for local trainer Chris Mason

Gilt Edge quickly doubled up for local trainer Chris Mason on a landmark day for Welsh racing on which spectators returned to the course for the first time since January 2020.

The five-year-old cruised to a five-length win in the 6f handicap following up a win at Lingfield earlier this month.

Mason, who trains seven miles from the course, was pleased to have found the winning formula for the mare who had begun to become frustrating.

He said: "We’ve always known she had more in the tank but she hasn’t wanted to give it to us, so we fitted the cheekpieces on last time.

"Luke Morris was on her when she won the first time. When we had the youngsters on board they haven’t been physically strong enough to lift her home."

There was no questioning winning rider William Cox's strength on the well-fancied 5-2 favourite, as the apprentice based at Andrew Balding's always looked confident.

The Welsh trainer's two wins this season have come from Gilt Edge, and he expressed his frustration at the lack of opportunities available to his 12 horses in training.

"It’s very hard to find races for these low-grade horses; it’s very frustrating. They don’t put the races on for them," he said.

"You’re having to make decisions that you don’t want to do. Unfortunately, until we get more racing for these horses they will be in the field."

Gambon continues good course form

The Eve Johnson Houghton-trained Gambon comfortably landed the 7f handicap.

The five-year-old, ridden by David Probert for the first time, justified the faith of punters as the odds-on favourite landed a third win at the track by a cosy three lengths.

Meanwhile, Tom Marquand prepared for Royal Ascot with a quickfire double on favourites Equally Fast in the 5f handicap and Sea La Rosa in the fillies' novice stakes.
