Grand National-winning rider David Mullins will miss a large part of the jumps season after fracturing his clavicle and thoracic vertebrae (T12) in a horror fall at Thurles on Thursday.

The 23-year-old jockey, whose finest hour came when guiding the Mouse Morris-trained Rule The World to victory in the 2016 Grand National victory, was due to undergo surgery on Friday or Saturday.

In an update on the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board’s Twitter account, chief medical officer Jennifer Pugh said: “David Mullins has fractured his clavicle & thoracic vertebrae (T12) and will undergo surgery. David is very grateful for all the well-wishes and also to and Medical Staff.”

The multiple Grade 1-winning rider had to be airlifted to Cork University hospital after falling heavily on 50-1 outsider Lean And Kean at the fourth fence in the second race at Thurles, the 2m2f handicap chase.

It is unclear how long Mullins will be out of action.
