Danny Brock: I'm riding for my family and to repay owners' and trainers' loyalty
Flat jockey Danny Brock is one of five riders set to be in the saddle at the boycotted meeting at Lingfield on Wednesday and believes he is repaying the loyalty of owners and trainers and supporting his family by participating.
Brock has mounts in all six races despite contact from trainers attempting to persuade him not to ride on the card that has been boycotted in a dispute over prize-money levels at Arena Racing Company tracks.
He has two rides for longstanding supporter John Jenkins and mounts for previous allies Lee Carter and Sheena West, as well as teaming up with Brian Barr and Nick Littmoden for the first time.
Brock, 26, said: “A few people have pressured me to change my mind as I was jocked up from an early stage – it was a tricky decision but I think I’ve done what’s best for me.
“I was going to upset people either way – and quite a lot of people – but the owners and trainers that have supported me since I’ve been riding have declared their horses to run and I felt I had to give them my support back.
“I’ve got two little girls and a mortgage to pay and I’m doing it for my kids and family as well as the people who have supported me."
Brock's weighing room colleagues at the Surrey track will be Rhiain Ingram, Philip Prince, Robbie Walsh and Italian Mirko Sanna, with the last-named making his debut in Britain.
Brock said: “I hope that by sticking my neck on the line the owners and trainers I’m riding for will continue to support me afterwards. The people that have been messaging me and trying to guide me in a different direction don’t use me anyway so I feel like I’m not going to lose anything from them.
“It sounds strange but I do agree with what they’re doing and I can fully understand why they are boycotting the meetings, but I have to be loyal to the owners and trainers that have looked after me over the years.”
