Cox hoping for high draw as Get It bids for breakthrough Super Sprint success

Clive Cox bids to end a long wait for his first win in the Weatherbys Super Sprint Stakes when Get It lines up in the £150,000 contest at Newbury on Sunday.

The trainer came closest to winning the juvenile event, first run in 1991, with runner-up Online Investor in 2001.

Get It is a general 5-1 joint-favourite with Happy Romance after finishing fourth in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot behind Tactical, who won the Group 2 Tattersalls July Stakes this month.

The Andrew Cohen-owned Get It is set to carry 8st 9lb and will therefore be partnered by Liam Keniry, having been ridden by Adam Kirby on his first two starts.

"We were pleased with him at Ascot because he had to work really hard from a low draw," Cox said. "He had a proper race and the form has worked out well with Tactical following up.

"He does like top of the ground and we'd be happier with a high draw. You always need a bit of luck with a big field but he's got tactical speed and experience which stands him in good stead.

"It might be a good race for paddock watchers as there could be some sharp cookies we're unaware of due to the delayed season. We bring the form angle to the table with the likes of Happy Romance."

Happy Romance was fifth in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot for trainer Richard Hannon, whose father won this race a record seven times.

Clover family hoping for dream win

There will be added pressure for trainer Tom Clover when Soldierpoy contests the Super Sprint as he belongs to a syndicate whose members include his mother Jackie and brothers Josh and Charlie.

Soldierpoy is owned by the Shimplingthorne Syndicate, which has around 15 members, and he is a general 14-1 shot for the Newbury sprint, having won his most recent start at Thirsk.

He will be ridden by Jason Watson, who partnered him when he was a close second on debut at Windsor.

"Obviously we've got a bit to find with the likes of Get It and Happy Romance," said Clover, who jokes that wife Jackie told him off for buying a son of Sepoy for £7,000 as a yearling in September 2019.

"He's a strong traveller so you'd think a race like this would suit him. As long as he behaves himself in the stalls he can run a big race. It would be lovely to think he can outrun his odds and place."

The ground at Newbury is expected to be good on Sunday and clerk of the course Keith Ottesen said on Thursday: "We're putting on a little bit of water today to hold the good going. We have a good day forecast on Friday and when we race on Saturday it will start on good ground.

"There's some light rain on Saturday and into the evening which should keep us on mainly good ground. It won't get too quick."
