The hard work starts now according to Epsom, which is delighted to be given the chance to stage the Derby but must now prepare to stage it behind closed doors.

Part of that preparation is spreading the word that no racegoers will be allowed admission to the sporting event that usually attracts the biggest one-day crowd in Britain, with more than 100,000 in attendance.

Tuesday night's special meeting of the Epsom and Walton Downs Conservators gave universal backing for a one-off, 24-hour closure of public access to the downs as the track stages the Derby and Oaks on a single seven-race card.
