Naas racecourse chairman and former Irish Thoroughbred Breeders' Association chairman Dermot Cantillon believes an extended shutdown of racing in Ireland could leave the industry in "life support mode", and has added his voice to those calling for a resumption of the sport behind closed doors.

Cantillon, who also owns Tinnakill House Stud, says the thoroughbred racing and breeding sectors suffer due to their symbiotic relationship of being a sport and an industry.

Irish racing stakeholders are anxiously waiting for the government to provide clarity on whether racing is included among the sports scheduled to return on June 29 at the earliest, or whether Horse Racing Ireland can negotiate an earlier restart.
