Coral and Ladbrokes limit Frankie Dettori multiples at Newmarket

Fears over Frankie Dettori running riot at Newmarket on Friday resulted in Coral and Ladbrokes offering starting prices (SP) only on legs five and six for accumulators on the jockey's rides.

The bookmakers adopted the same approach at Sandown on Eclipse day, when Dettori rode a treble.

Speaking prior to racing, Simon Clare, Ladbrokes Coral PR director, said: "Frankie Dettori has six rides at Newmarket with the acca coming in at around 20,000-1 and we are continuing to see a real upsurge in small-stakes multiples on his mounts following his Royal Ascot heroics, and a high-profile treble featuring Enable on Saturday.

"With such large cumulative odds, Ladbrokes Coral are looking at tens of millions of pounds worth of liabilities on Dettori and we have to take steps to manage that level of exposure. Any customer placing a five-fold or six-fold on Frankie's mounts today will only be able to take starting price on the last two legs rather than a fixed price.

Coral respond after Matt Chapman slams firm on ITV over Dettori multiples

"This is a unique phenomenon specific to Frankie Dettori and entirely reflective of his huge popularity among recreational punters and racing fans, and the success he is enjoying on the biggest days. Hence we are taking this very specific action to manage our exposure."

The move at Sandown prompted scathing criticism from ITV broadcaster Matt Chapman, describing it as "absolutely pathetic".

Dettori won on Raffle Prize, his first mount, but the accumulators bit the dust when the well-fancied Ben Vrackie was turned over in the 1m6f handicap.
