Coneygree heads to Ffos Las as Punchestown prep steps up a gear
Racegoers at Ffos Las on Sunday will have the added bonus of watching 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Coneygree exercise before racing.
Absent since finishing second to Cue Card in the Betfair Chase last November on his first start for more than a year, Coneygree was forced to miss the Cheltenham Festival, but connections are committed to taking him to Ireland for a clash with this season's Gold Cup hero Sizing John in the Coral Punchestown Gold Cup on April 26.
The Mark Bradstock-trained ten-year-old will step up his preparation for that when working with stablemate and half-brother Flintham around 30 minutes or so before the seven-race card at Ffos Las starts at 2.15pm.
"We're delighted to have him," said the track's clerk of the course Keith Ottesen. "The theme of the day is all about the horses, so we've got a few other attractions going on, including a dressage display and some pony club stuff.
"To have the 2015 Gold Cup winner here as well is great. As usual we've had more rain than most places and the ground will be genuinely good."
On The Fringe, who was pulled up before two out in the Foxhunters' Chase at Aintree on Thursday, is to undergo a veterinary check on Monday to see if a reason can be found for his disappointing display when favourite for a race he won in 2015 and 2016.
The 12-year-old, who started 7-4 favourite, was never in contention and trainer Enda Bolger said on Friday: "We're going to have him fully checked out on Monday and might learn something then.
"He was struggling from the second fence, and although he made a mistake at the Chair the writing was on the wall at that stage. Something must have been amiss."
