Cheveley Park Stud will be two-handed in a bid to win the Group 1 Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday.

Persuasive and Spangled, who are tasked with giving their owners a third win in the race, are probably on a farewell tour before boosting the broodmare band at Cheveley Park's stud operation, which lies just three miles from the Rowley Mile.

The stud won the mile contest with the Sir Michael Stoute-trained pair Peeress (2005) and Integral (2014).

Persuasive, a four-time winner at three, has been lightly raced this year and has a fourth crack at Group 1 level here. Most recently, she was third in the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown and is a general 5-2 favourite to oblige with, the Aidan O'Brien-trained Roly Poly next best at 4-1.

Chris Richardson, Cheveley Park racing manager, said: "Persuasive ran very well considering where she was drawn in Ireland and she has worked well since.

"Any ease in the ground won't bother her and it would be nice if she could go out on a high – she's 90 per cent certain to retire to stud after the race."

Spangled 'bred to get a mile'

The paddock is also a likely destination for Spangled, who has also been lightly raced this year after suffering a setback in the spring.

The Roger Varian-trained chestnut may have needed the run when down the field in the Group 3 City of York Stakes last time but has won only over seven furlongs.

Richardson added: "Spangled had a foot problem earlier this year that took forever to heal, but she's fine now and we're hopeful she can run a nice race. A mile is the full extent of her stamina but she's bred to get it."
