Ten-day ban for Cameron Noble after he rides finish a lap early at Chester

Cameron Noble: stood down for ten days

A great day turned to disaster for 3lb claimer Cameron Noble when he was banned for ten days at Chester after riding a finish a circuit early.

He had scored a notable victory when making all on Heart Of Soul in the 1m4f apprentice handicap but was punished for his ride on 14-1 shot Michael’s Mount in the 2m2f Chester Plate, a consolation race for the Chester Cup.

Again setting off in front, he kicked determinedly clear in the straight for the first time, leaving the impression that he was unaware there was still another lap to go.

Noble seemed to realise his mistake and his mount did well to remain in contention for much of the final circuit, eventually finishing fourth behind Coeur De Lion.

The stewards inquired into his ride and suspended him from May 24 to June 3. Noble was reluctant to comment but Michael’s Mount's trainer Ian Williams had sympathy for the apprentice.

"He's messed up but we can’t throw stones in glass houses, we've all done it," he said. "But when it happens it's very disappointing.

"It's disappointing for everybody involved and I'm very disappointed for the owners, they've looked after this horse for a good time and it was a big shout for him today, and the one who’s going to take the brunt of it is the jockey.

"He did a wonderful job of riding in the previous race and I told him I thought this horse would go really well. He's obviously a class rider, he showed that in the previous race, but these things happen."

The veterinary officer reported that Michael's Mount was suffering from post-race ataxia.
