Altior: step up or continue two-mile dominance? Our experts give their opinions

If it is the King George for Altior next season, that's a fair route to take as he's looking more like a three-mile chaser now. You can be sure he'd give a good account, although whether he'd be as effective over further, I'm not sure. I've always felt the secret to his success is that he's so relaxed. He almost runs behind the bridle, expending little energy, with a power-packed kick at the end. Over three miles it would be different. He'd be up against stronger stayers, and younger horses, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him back defending his Champion Chase crown next March.

Of course racing fans want to see Altior step up in trip, and a King George with him, Cyrname, Topofthegame, Clan Des Obeaux plus whoever wins the Gold Cup promises to be one of the races of the century. Altior achieved an incredible feat when matching the record of Big Buck's and I expect him to eclipse the great staying hurdler. Given the Arkle was a well-below average edition, he will probably have the two-mile division to himself again, but it doesn't matter how many races he wins: if he wants to be considered a true great he has to step up in trip.

Now Altior is a dual Champion Chase winner I think the time has come for the great horse to step up in trip. He's renowned for hitting flat spots before a race develops in earnest, and there's no reason why he wouldn't improve upped in distance. I'd circle a big red mark around the King George on Boxing Day, which would be the acid test to see if he stays. Providing he passes that assignment, all roads should lead to the Irish, Cheltenham and Punchestown Gold Cups. If he proved his worth over staying trips he'd undoubtedly cement his status as one of the best ever.
