Champion Brian Hughes and the Irish out of luck in County Durham

Guetapan Collonges and William Kennedy after winning at Sedgefield
1 of 1

Champion jockey Brian Hughes drew a blank on the first day of his alternative Cheltenham week when the best he could muster was a second from six rides.

The Irish may have been in business in Gloucestershire but they were out of luck in County Durham when a gamble on the Hughes-ridden Little Actress went astray in the opening 2m4f mares' novice hurdle.

One of two Stuart Crawford-trained runners in the field, Little Actress had to play a supporting role to Miss Tara Moss, who was one of several front-runners to oblige throughout the afternoon.

Winning jockey Sean Quinlan told Sky Sports Racing of the Oliver Greenall-trained mare: "It wasn't the plan to make the running but no-one else wanted to go on and it worked a treat."

Longsdon in the money

One of the few winners to come from off the pace throughout the afternoon was the Charlie Longsdon-trained Guetapan Collonges who gave his many supporters a fright before getting up to land the 2m4f handicap hurdle only after the last.

Charlie Longsdon: sent Guetapan Collonges to win the 2m4f handicap hurdle

Winning jockey William Kennedy said of the 15-8 favourite: "It wasn't looking likely at one point but he stays well and when we jumped the last I knew I could catch the eventual second."

Reed double

Jockey Harry Reed landed a double, highlighted by another all-the-way winner in Gran Paradiso in the 3m2½f handicap chase.

Reed, who had kicked off with Mongol Emperor justifing odds of 8-15 in the preceding 2m1f handicap hurdle, did not see another rival when accounting for Another Emotion.

He said: "I'll go north or south for a winner but I knew Gran Paradiso would get this sort of trip as he'd got three miles in his point-to-points."
