Cash, Flash and a trip to Nutbush feature on Brendan Powell's playlist

Mick Jagger says it's all right now, in fact it's a gas

Our series continues with wannabe guitar hero Brendan Powell taking us through the soundtrack of his jockey's life

When I'm getting psyched for a race I listen to . . . Jumping Jack Flash, by the Rolling Stones

I love the Stones, and this song always gets me pumped up, gets me going. I know they're a bit before my time but I like a fair bit of older stuff – I listen to Absolute Radio and Radio X and it's the sort of music they play. I always liked the thought of playing the guitar but it's hard to find the time – and people to put up with it!

When I'm celebrating a winner I listen to . . . Nutbush City Limits, by Ike and Tina Turner

Another oldie, well before my time. I remember going with my mother to the gym years ago, just messing around in the pool, having fun, and this must have been on in the background. It's associated with happy memories and it's a good song to listen to on the way back from the races after a winner.

When I'm annoyed about a loser I listen to . . . A Satisfied Mind, by Johnny Cash

It's a song about perspective – about how some people seem to have everything they want, but it doesn't always make them happy. It's a song about being happy with what you have, and it picks me up if I'm a bit down. "Money can't buy back your youth when you're old / Or a friend when you're lonely or a love that's grown cold / The wealthiest person is a pauper at times / Compared to the man with a satisfied mind."

When I'm stuck in traffic I listen to . . . My Little Demon, by Fleetwood Mac

It's an energetic song if you're stuck in traffic going nowhere. I remember listening to it on the way to Dingle for the pony racing, there was a carload of us listening along, and it put everyone in a good mood despite the fact we weren't going anywhere fast. Yes, all right, now and again I'll be singing along to it, rather badly.

When I'm relaxing at home I listen to . . . Cloud Rider, by Paul Kalkbrenner

I go to a few dance festivals in the summer – last one I went to was Creamfields – and at this time of year, when it's dark by five and cold outside, I like to stick a few techno, dance tracks on to remind me of what summer is like. This is a good one.
