Carberry returns to old stomping ground - with hopes for new success

Paul Carberry will return to Liverpool next month – the scene of one of his greatest triumphs when landing the 1999 Grand National on Bobbyjo – to compete at the Liverpool International Horse Show.

Although Carberry retired from race riding last year, he hasn’t moved far from the scene, instead forging a new career buying and selling horses while also honing his show jumping skills before taking to the big stage.

“To be competing at Liverpool International is just fantastic and will no doubt bring back memories of many happy times at Aintree,” said Carberry, speaking to RUK.

“I’ve made the transition to show jumping relatively quickly, but over the years it has always been a part of my life, just not the main competitive focus.”

Scaling the heights for Greatwood

Sasha Thorbek-Hooper continued her search for adrenaline kicks on Friday when abseiling 100ft down the offices of Octopus Investments in London to raise money for Greatwood, one of Britain’s leading charities for ex-racehorses.

Thorbek-Hooper, who works in PR and marketing for the charity, has quite a head for heights having already completed a 10,000ft sky dive and tried out parapenting – skiing off a mountain with a parachute to help you down, for those of us who aren’t such thrillseekers. The mum of five also finished third in Newbury’s 2014 charity race on board the Nicky Henderson-trained Thanks For Coming.

Tom Jonason has been appointed head of business development at Weatherbys Bank.

Jonason, who joins the company from Racing FX, spent six years as assistant trainer to Paul Nicholls before moving to the world of finance.
