Captain America the hero in Greyville Grade 1

Greyville: home of South's Africa's number one race, the Durban July
1 of 1

Report: South Africa, Saturday

Greyville: Rising Sun Gold Challenge (Grade 1) | 1m | turf | 3yo+

Captain America (Brett Crawford/Corne Orffer), part-owned by Diane Nagle, ran out a most convincing winner of the Greyville Grade 1 after being positioned in the first three throughout, before going clear over a furlong from home to beat the slow-starting Trip To Heaven by a length and a half.

The runner-up had finished first in this race 12 months ago only to lose it in the stewards' room.

At the other end of the field the favourite, Marinaresco, was a big disappointment. He had a decent position but failed to pick up and managed only 11th. New Predator, the horse Gavin Lerena flew back from Britain to ride, was seventh.

Orffer said: "Captain America is a big horse and he needs a bit of time to get going, but when I shook him up he gave me a really good kick."

Crawford added: "Before this he had never quite got this track right, but he put that to bed today. He has been the most amazing horse to train and I don't think you will find a more genuine sort."

Captain America was a 33-1 chance for the Vodacom Durban July but his price is expected to tumble after this, even though that race's 1m3f trip will stretch his stamina to the limit.
