Burke back from broken leg and excited by Space ride
Jonathan Burke has waved goodbye to a tortuous 2016 and hopes for a more fortunate 2017, starting on Saturday at Navan where he has been booked to ride Sir Ector (1.35), A Rated (2.10) and Ontopoftheworld (3.55).
Burke has been out of action since the first week of December when he fractured his fibula following a fall from All The Answers at Fairyhouse, the latest in a long line of nasty injuries, but is excited about his return to the saddle and cannot wait to partner Space Cadet in the coral.ie Leopardstown Handicap Chase on Sunday.
"I feel great and I cannot wait to get back," Burke said. "It was tough being out over Christmas but the leg feels good and strong and I am ready to return. I have been swimming and going down to the sports clinic in Santry as well as riding out as well so I am ready.
"I cannot thank Gordon [Elliott] enough for getting me to ride Space Cadet on Sunday. It is a lovely ride to look forward to and he looks to have a great chance. I can't wait to ride him."
From one returning jockey to one who faces a spell on the sidelines as Phillip Enright is understood to have broken his jaw following his crashing fall from Letter Of Credit in the Kinloch Brae Chase at Thurles on Thursday.
