The British foal crop is dropping more quickly than expected and could have major impacts if not addressed

British racing could face catastrophic consequences unless a nosedive in the number of foals being bred is urgently addressed, the sport has been warned.
Foal numbers have fallen far more quickly than predicted, according to figures produced by the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (TBA), with the result the 2026 crop is expected to drop to a number that was not forecast to be reached until 2051.
TBA chairman Philip Newton has warned this will have a disastrous impact, including a decline in levy and media rights and the possibility of racecourse closures, unless action is taken.
