Some of the greatest racemares have shown top-class form at the age of six or older, as Australian amazon Winx proved in the last 12 months.

Winx was a seven-year-old when, last October, she scored a unique fourth victory in the Cox Plate, Australia's premier weight-for-age race. On her retirement in April, she had won her last 33 races.

Another Aussie star, Black Caviar, was unbeaten in a career of 25 races, the final three of them all Group 1 races when she was six.
