Some 16 hours after guiding Predilection to victory in a mile handicap at Newmarket – and in doing so securing the 45-year-old's 3,000th in Britain – Frankie Dettori is back on the day job gearing up for three rides at Newbury.

His dark sunglasses do not hide eyes baggy from late-night celebrations, but shelter the tanned Italian's face from a sun-drenched racecourse.

The track is packed with fans of Will Young, who is in action after racing. Like Young, Dettori is an entertainer, but his biggest hits have come on horseback and there has been more than a few number ones – 3,000 of them, to be precise.
