Owen Burrows has been forced to shelve the proposed reappearance of Gethin due to quick ground but is eyeing a contingency plan for his one-time Derby hope.

The unbeaten three-year-old held two entries at Windsor on Saturday – in the Listed August Stakes and Group 3 Winter Hill Stakes – but was not declared on Thursday after the Lambourn trainer walked the track on the way to Kempton on Wednesday.

Gethin, who ran out an eyecatching six-length winner on his debut at Nottingham last October, was cut to 20-1 (from 50) with Paddy Power for the Derby after he made it two from two in a Newbury novice in April. However, he was ruled out of running in the Classic after a setback in the spring and returned to full training only towards the end of last month.
