'Illinois is the one to beat but my horse knows how to battle' - new test in store for David Menuisier's Group 1 winner Sunway
David Menuisier is favouring stepping up in trip for a tilt at the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup rather than taking on the leading middle-distance performers in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes with his Group 1 winner Sunway.
Owned by Guy Pariente and Qatar Racing, Sunway finished fourth over a mile and a half in the King George at Ascot 12 months ago and filled the same position over the same course and distance in the Hardwicke Stakes at last month's royal meeting. Menuisier is now keen to test him over two miles on the first day of Glorious Goodwood on July 29.
"I left him in the King George just in case, but I think it makes sense to step him up in trip," said the trainer. "He ran well in the Hardwicke but he's below the very best over a mile and a half, so we need to try something different.
