'I think he has slightly unique skills and is probably quicker than the others who will turn up in the Guineas'

Harry Charlton is hoping to get the green light from Juddmonte to run Cosmic Year in next weekend’s Irish 2,000 Guineas – and is sure his unbeaten star would have a massive chance if he is allowed to line up.

Charlton was speaking to the Racing Post for a major interview in Sunday’s newspaper in which he discusses being made to get “a real job” in London, the pressure of following in some major footsteps at the historic Beckhampton Stables and the growing difficulty faced by trainers to make the job pay.

Of course, training a superstar would help in that respect and Charlton is confident he has one in Cosmic Year, for all that the three-year-old has not yet been given the chance to show what he can do in a Classic, with Juddmonte opting to send Field Of Gold to Newmarket and Jonquil to Longchamp.

"He's had a perfect set-up until now," he said. "Him winning as far as he did first time out [in a Sandown novice] was a surprise, because I didn't do too much with him at two, so I knew he was doing everything easily but I didn't know what was under the bonnet.

"Second time out I didn't see how he could get beat, because he had no faults or vices or issues, he's bombproof at home so I trusted that he'd deliver.

"Then we went to Newmarket and some of them had lofty ratings and had run in good races, but although it didn't quite go to plan – he didn't have a lead the whole way, Ryan [Moore] had to ask him quite early and he got a bit lost in the Dip – he still won nicely and looked impressive."

That Listed win might well be followed by the Irish 2,000 Guineas and even the presence of Field Of Gold, in the same colours, hasn’t stopped Charlton unpicking the race.

"I think he has slightly unique skills," he explained. "I think he's probably quicker than the others who will turn up in the Guineas, so if we can use that to our advantage he'll have a chance.

"Oisin [Murphy, who rode him to his first two successes] has always been convinced he'll stay a mile and I think he will because he's very relaxed when he gets cover.

"The time people tell me he's too quick to stay the Guineas trip on what they say is a stiff track, but on everything we've seen we think he will, particularly if Aidan [O'Brien] doesn't have one of those ten-furlong horses that needs a flat-out pace."
