Flying Frankie set for plenty more time in the air

It's the most famous leap in the air since the Fosbury Flop and we could well see it again at Newbury on Saturday.

Should Galileo Gold land another Group 1 victory, the photographers will cram the winner's enclosure - and it won't be because of the chestnut colt's good looks.

Frankie Dettori has had cameras clicking as he jumps spectacularly off the back of big-race winners for well over 20 years and he is not about to stop doing it now.

Recalling the origins of the stunt, Dettori, 46, said: "I spent four winters in California from 1987-1991 for three months at a time.

"Angel Cordero, who was my hero, used to come to Santa Anita and Hollywood Park to ride in the big races for D Wayne Lukas and he'd do it if he won. I'd joke around saying I'd do it too and joke in the barn doing it.

"I came back to England and completely forgot about it, but when Barathea won at the Breeders' Cup D Wayne Lukas said I should do it and that's where it started. I'll carry on until my knees give up!"
